Challenges and Requirements

Strict Visual Demands for Live Broadcast

The event was broadcast live on German television and multiple streaming platforms simultaneously. This imposed strict requirements on LED screen performance — specifically, the display needed to deliver flicker-free visuals at high refresh rates compatible with broadcast-grade cameras operating at various shutter speeds. Any visible scan lines or moiré patterns would be unacceptable for the broadcast feed.

Large-Scale Screen Configuration in Limited Setup Time

The main stage backdrop measured approximately 14 meters wide by 6 meters high, constructed entirely from P2.604 panels. Additionally, two side screens — each measuring 5 meters wide by 3 meters high — flanked the stage for audience members seated at wider angles. The production schedule allowed only 16 hours for complete LED installation, signal testing, and content rehearsal, requiring a cabinet design that enabled rapid assembly without compromising structural integrity.

Close Viewing Distance for Front-Row Audience

The front row of seating began just 4.5 meters from the main LED wall. At such a close viewing distance, any pixel structure visibility or color inconsistency between panels would be immediately noticeable. The client explicitly requested a pixel pitch no larger than 3mm to ensure a smooth, cohesive image even for VIP guests seated nearest the stage.

Content Versatility

The event program alternated between full-motion video playback (artist performance visuals and pre-recorded clips), real-time live camera feeds (IMAG — Image Magnification), data-rich presentation slides with fine text, and dynamic motion graphics with fast transitions. The LED solution needed to handle all content types without visible artifacts, lag, or color banding.

Solution: REISSOPTO P2.604 Indoor Rental LED Display

Why P2.604 Was Selected

The P2.604 pixel pitch delivers a resolution density of approximately 147,456 pixels per square meter, striking the ideal balance between ultra-fine detail for close viewing and cost efficiency for a large-area installation. Compared to P1.9 alternatives, the P2.604 provided equivalent perceived quality at the 4.5m minimum viewing distance while reducing total panel count by over 30%, directly shortening installation time and lowering project budget.

Installation Process

Day 1: Load-In and Rigging (Hours 1–8)

The REISSOPTO P2.604 panels arrived at Festhalle Frankfurt in 24 flight cases, each containing 19 panels with integrated hanging hardware. The die-cast aluminum cabinet design features a precision quick-lock mechanism that allows two technicians to connect panels at a rate of approximately 40 panels per hour without tools.

The main backdrop was constructed using a ground-support stacking method for the bottom 4 rows, with the upper 8 rows flown from the venue's rigging grid using REISSOPTO's dedicated hanging bars. Each hanging bar supports a column of 12 panels and distributes load evenly across the truss points. Total rigging weight for the main screen (including hanging hardware) was approximately 2,800kg, well within Festhalle's 5,000kg grid rating for the main stage position.

Day 1: Signal and Power Distribution (Hours 8–12)

Signal distribution utilized a Novastar A10s Plus processor as the primary controller, paired with NovaStar VX1000 media servers for content playback. Redundant signal paths (Loop A and Loop B) ensured zero-interruption capability — if any single receiving card or data cable failed, the backup path would maintain display continuity with zero visible disruption.

Power distribution was configured with 32A three-phase circuits, distributed through custom power distro panels with individual circuit breakers for every 4 panels. Average total power draw during content playback measured 8.4kW for the main screen and 1.5kW per side screen.

Day 1: Calibration and Content Rehearsal (Hours 12–16)

Following physical installation, the REISSOPTO technical team performed panel-by-panel brightness and color calibration using Novastar's SmartLCT software and a CS-200 colorimeter at 9 reference points across the display surface. This calibration process corrected any minor LED bin variations, ensuring uniform color temperature (target: 6500K ± 100K) and brightness (deviation < 3%) across the entire 84sqm main screen.

Camera tests were conducted with the broadcast team using Sony HDC-4300 cameras at shutter speeds of 1/50s, 1/100s, and 1/250s. The refresh rate was set to 3840Hz, which produced completely clean captures at all tested shutter speeds with no visible scan lines or banding.

Performance During the Event

Night 1: Musical Performances

During the first evening, the main screen displayed immersive full-motion background visuals synchronized to live musical performances. Content resolution matched the screen's native 5K+ horizontal resolution, delivering exceptional clarity that was immediately noted by the broadcast director. The 5000:1 contrast ratio allowed deep black backgrounds between acts, creating a true "infinity" effect where the screen boundaries visually disappeared into the darkened stage.

Night 2: Awards Ceremony and Presentations

The second evening focused on the awards ceremony, requiring frequent switching between live camera feeds (IMAG), nominee highlight reels, and presentation graphics with detailed text and corporate branding. The P2.604's 16-bit grayscale processing ensured smooth gradient rendering in corporate logos and skin tones during close-up shots. Text readability was confirmed legible for audience members as close as 4 meters, with no visible pixel structure distracting from content.

Broadcast Quality Feedback

The lead broadcast engineer reported that the LED wall performed "significantly above expectations" for camera capture quality, specifically noting the absence of any color fringing at panel seam boundaries — a common issue with lower-quality rental panels. The broadcast feed required zero post-processing color correction for the LED wall content, which simplified the live production workflow considerably.

Key Advantages Demonstrated

Rapid Assembly and Disassembly

Total installation time from first panel unpacked to fully calibrated display: 15.5 hours (under the 16-hour allocation). Disassembly and pack-down after the final show: 6 hours. The quick-lock mechanism and lightweight 7.5kg panels meant that a crew of 8 technicians could handle the entire 456-panel deployment without specialized heavy equipment beyond standard chain hoists for the flown sections.

Broadcast-Grade Visual Performance

The 3840Hz refresh rate (with 7680Hz capability) combined with SMD2121 black-face LEDs delivered a display surface that was virtually indistinguishable from a flat-panel monitor when viewed through broadcast cameras. The production team confirmed this was the first rental LED deployment at this venue where no camera-specific adjustments were required.

Seamless Panel Uniformity

Post-calibration measurements showed brightness uniformity of 97.8% across the main screen and color uniformity (delta-u'v') below 0.003 across all 336 panels. For the audience, this translated to a completely seamless image with no visible grid lines or brightness hotspots — critical for the front-row VIP experience.

Structural Reliability

Across both performance nights (approximately 11 hours of continuous operation), zero pixel failures or panel malfunctions were recorded. The redundant signal architecture was not triggered at any point, confirming primary signal path stability throughout the event.

Client Testimonial

The event production director commented: "We evaluated three different LED manufacturers for this project. REISSOPTO's P2.604 won on a combination of factors — the visual quality matched panels costing 40% more, the installation speed saved us critical hours in a tight venue schedule, and the on-site technical support gave us complete confidence throughout both live shows. We have already specified this product for two additional events in Q2 2025."
